Pepp Talk: Celebrate National Pepperoni Day with Domino’s!

Simple, yet sublime. Modest, yet magnificent.

Nothing compares to the utter perfection of a Pepperoni pizza.

Pepperoni and pizza: name a more iconic duo.

Lovingly crafted by passionate pizza makers (arguably the best job in the world!) for decades, the Pepperoni pizza has become so iconic it has its own national day of celebration.

And rightfully so, we say.

In recognition of National Pepperoni Day this Sunday, 20 September 2020, we are celebrating the pure genius that is the world’s most popular pizza.

She’s beauty. She’s grace. She’s great to share with mates.

The COVID-19 pandemic has robbed us of many joys we once took for granted, but we count ourselves lucky that we can still enjoy our favourite slice.

And it goes without saying that for many pizza lovers, a Pepperoni pizza is the pie of choice.

In Australia, Pepperoni is the most pizza on the menu, with Domino’s stores in the country delivering an average of 29,451 Pepperoni, 8,421 Loaded Pepperoni, and 2,695 New Yorker Pepperoni pizzas EVERY DAY.

Factor in the pepperoni that also features on a variety of Domino’s other pizza flavours and that’s 1,407 metric tonnes of pepperoni A YEAR.

So where did this passion for pepperoni pizza originate?

We all know pizza has an Italian heritage, but the addition of pepperoni to this popular dish actually originated in America, with the first known mention of “pepperoni” occurring in 1919 in New York City – a city now infamous for its pizza prowess.

A variation on traditional Italian salami, pepperoni literally translates to “big peppers”, most likely because early pepperoni would have included ingredients like bell peppers.

Over the years, pepperoni on pizza has only continued to grow in popularity, its salty and slightly sweet flavour profile complimenting the traditional tomato sauce and cheese combination of a typical pizza.

These days, pepperoni is so synonymous with pizza that it’s the featured topping on the official pizza emoji! 🍕 Ollie Wagner, the pizza emoji’s designer (and self-professed pepperoni pizza lover) believes it’s not just the taste of the pizza that makes it so appealing, but the way it looks. The small, circular slices distributed across a larger, circular pie make this pizza appealing to the eye.

Even some of the most devout vegetarians won’t deny the distinct, mouth-watering aroma of a pepperoni pizza slice.

To share the joy of pepperoni with our vegetarian pizza lovers, Domino’s became the first pizza chain in Australia to introduce a limited edition plant-based pepperoni to the menu in 2019, giving more customers a chance to enjoy the delicious taste sensation.
