So where did this passion for pepperoni pizza originate?
We all know pizza has an Italian heritage, but the addition of pepperoni to this popular dish actually originated in America, with the first known mention of “pepperoni” occurring in 1919 in New York City – a city now infamous for its pizza prowess.
A variation on traditional Italian salami, pepperoni literally translates to “big peppers”, most likely because early pepperoni would have included ingredients like bell peppers.
Over the years, pepperoni on pizza has only continued to grow in popularity, its salty and slightly sweet flavour profile complimenting the traditional tomato sauce and cheese combination of a typical pizza.
These days, pepperoni is so synonymous with pizza that it’s the featured topping on the official pizza emoji! 🍕 Ollie Wagner, the pizza emoji’s designer (and self-professed pepperoni pizza lover) believes it’s not just the taste of the pizza that makes it so appealing, but the way it looks.
