How to land your dream job (and have your slice of pizza too!)
Meet Bree, Domino’s Social Media Content Manager for Australia and New Zealand.
Would you believe she has spent more than half her life thinking about pizza?
A self-confessed ‘Dominoid’, Bree once dreamed of combining her love of social media and marketing, and her passion for pizza, into a role in the Domino’s Marketing Team.
Little did she know that 14 years later her dream would come true thanks to a lot of hard work, a cup of ambition and a pinch of determination!
After working her way through the ranks from Delivery Expert, to Store Manager, Social Media Moderator and most recently Social Media Content Manager, Bree knows what it’s like to #hustle and land your dream job.
So, what’s her ‘recipe for success’? We sat down with Bree to learn more.
Let’s throw it back to the very beginning. The year was 2007. Steve Jobs had just announced the iPhone, and Miley Cyrus was halfway through a ‘Best of Both Worlds’ tour (in which she performed as both herself, and Hannah Montana, of course).
At age 13, Bree was eager to get a job and start earning some ‘dough’. After applying for several jobs, she received a call from Domino’s Coolum inviting her in for an interview.
Seven days later, she had her first shift. And the rest is history!
“I absolutely loved being part of a team, and I loved making pizzas. I loved listening to music while delivering pizzas to my favourite regulars and I loved the satisfaction that came with being prepared – having a cross-trained team, a cold room full of fresh dough, a make bench filled with fresh toppings and happy, satisfied customers at the end of the night.
“Honestly, there wasn’t anything I didn’t love,” says Bree.
Passionate about Domino’s, but itching for a future in Social Media Marketing, Bree wasn’t sure how to combine the two at first. It was 2007 after all, and her dream role simply didn’t exist yet.
“I studied a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) at the Queensland University of Technology and undertook several marketing electives whilst working at Domino’s,” she says.
“That’s when I saw a position available for a casual Social Media Moderator role at Domino’s Head Office, and I applied right away!
“In the lead up to my first day at Head Office, I was so nervous! I used to spend my days preparing my team for new pizza launches, and putting posters up in my store’s windows, and suddenly I was working alongside the team who developed those new pizzas and designed those window posters… it was surreal.”
But it didn’t take long for Bree to feel comfortable, quickly realising the same team culture she knew and loved so much in-store was present at Domino’s Head Office too.
With several years’ experience in-store, having the knowledge of how stores operated made a world of difference when resolving customer feedback.
After working as a Social Media Moderator for two years, Bree had a good feel for Domino’s tone of voice and what sort of content customers loved.
When a Social Media Coordinator position in Domino’s Marketing Team became available in 2017, Bree jumped at the opportunity to make the transition.
“I was so junior to the role, but I was bursting with ideas and passion for both Domino’s and the Social Media universe,” Bree says.
“Honestly, I am forever grateful that Domino’s took a chance on me and believed that I could do it.”
Over the next few years, Bree continued gaining the valuable skills and knowledge necessary to become Domino’s ANZ Social Media Manager, leading a high-performing team of three.
Now, Bree spends her time planning future content, managing photoshoots and filming TikToks, working with influencers and on cool collaborations with brands like Oodie. AKA her ultimate dream.
The best part? No two days are ever the same.
“I love how fast paced Domino’s is. If I have an idea, it’s not uncommon to have business approval on it that same day!” she says.
“It’s also incredible being able to give back to our community with more than just pizza. During the pandemic, we had the opportunity to pay the bills of customers doing it tough, and more recently, we were able to reunite some lucky Aussies with their Kiwi friends and family by covering return flights to New Zealand (and a pizza party to share when they get there, of course).”
Domino’s hybrid working arrangement also means Bree is afforded the privilege of working remotely, making the decision to relocate from Brisbane to Sydney in mid-2020.
On top of capturing content in new and different locations, Bree loves being able to shine a spotlight on local Domino’s franchisees and team members.
“My partner and extended family live in Sydney, so it’s great to be closer to them. It has also opened up so much opportunity to capture new and exciting content for our social media channels,” she says.
Looking back at how far she has come, Bree says every day feels like a ‘pinch me’ moment.
“In 2014, I worked a shift at Domino's Taringa. That night I got home and saw a photo of me featured on the Domino's Instagram. I still remember thinking "wow, the person who runs the Domino’s Instagram account was there today. Best job in the world!
“Now, that person is me. And I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities Domino’s has given me over the years.”
Her advice to other people eager to get their foot in the door at Domino’s (or to bag their dream job, wherever it may be)?
“Be bold and laser focused on what you want. It’s important to be open to opportunities, to ask questions, and to put yourself out there.”
After 14 years, you may be thinking “why Domino’s?”
According to Bree, it’s all about the people, the culture, the opportunities... and of course, the pizza.
“I’ve worked at Domino’s for over half my life! It’s what I know, it’s what I’m good at, it’s what I’m passionate about. I’ve always felt a sense of belonging at Domino’s, no matter what role, what team, or what state I was in... At Domino’s, there’s a universal sense of belonging – and that’s what I love most!” she says.
Oh, and for anyone wondering, the answer is “no”. After 14 years, Bree is still not sick of eating pizza!
