Cairns home to fastest pizza makers in Australia and New Zealand

Cairns is home to some of the fastest pizza makers in Australia and New Zealand, with the city laying claim to four of the six teams competing in Domino’s annual “Pizza Making Competition” finals next week.

In what’s sure to be a nail-biter, teams from Domino’s Cairns City, Manunda, Edmonton and Earlville will battle it out for the title of Australia’s fastest Pizza Making Champions, after securing their place in the trial rounds earlier this year.

Local Domino’s Cairns City and Manunda franchisee Kym Reilly is quietly confident in the lead up to the highly anticipated finals, with both of her teams already breaking records in the trials.

“Our teams recorded the fastest times in the history of the competition, with Manunda recording a make time of 36 seconds, and Cairns City 39 seconds,” Ms Reilly said.

Despite an impressive performance in the trials, Ms Reilly and her teams are up against heavy competition in defending champions Domino’s Earlville, who have taken out the title for the past four consecutive years.

Ms Reilly, who will be competing alongside her Cairns City team, said they are taking no chances.

“Preparation is key. We’ve been coming together twice a week to train since the beginning of the year, learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses and working out any kinks.

“We’ve got the act of preparing perfect pizzas down to a fine art!”

The Pizza Making Competition traditionally takes place in front of a live audience at Domino’s annual ANZ Rally, however due to the current pandemic, this years’ competition will be held virtually, with Domino’s team members eagerly tuning in from around the country and across the Tasman.

To be crowned Australia’s fastest pizza makers, each team must prepare six perfect pizzas in under two minutes, including two BBQ Meatlovers, Supreme and Hawaiian pizzas, meaning they must know the exact toppings and weights of ingredients for Domino’s most popular menu items.

But it’s not merely about speed.

Each topping must be measured and placed correctly, with teams receiving penalties for incorrect weights or poor presentation.

Domino’s Pizza Making Competition final is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 28 July 2020.

In the meantime, Cairns locals can rest easy knowing some of Australia’s fastest pizza makers are standing by ready to promptly and perfectly prepare their favourite Domino’s pizza.
