What’s for dinner? Aussies grappling with 'fridge fatigue'

If you have ever ordered pizza for dinner even though you have a fridge full of groceries, you are not alone.

According to a recent Domino's customer poll*, 84 per cent of respondents (2612 people) said they had ordered pizza for dinner despite having only just stocked up at the supermarket.

The main reason? They were “too tired to cook”.

Fifty-four per cent (1457 people) agreed the prospect of cooking at the end of the day was simply too exhausting, with 84 per cent confessing they had made up an excuse so they could 'order in' rather than work in the kitchen.

Twenty-two per cent (597 people) also opted to have pizza delivered directly to their door to avoid having to “get in the car again”.

Domino's ANZ Chief Marketing Officer Adam Ballesty said it was not surprising people wanted a break.

“I think we are all looking for ways to be a little kinder to ourselves when the world demands so much of us right now,” he said.

“Letting someone else take care of dinner and the dishes is just one way to lighten some of the load.”

Even though we were all spending more time at home, Mr Ballesty said our lives were no less busy.

In fact, the line between work and home was increasingly blurred and people were looking to steal back precious moments for the things they actually loved doing at home.

“One really interesting result from this poll was that people are choosing to order in not because they necessarily dislike cooking, but because it means they get to spend more time with their family and friends or finish an episode of their favourite TV show,” Mr Ballesty said.

“Being present and celebrating the small stuff is just as important, if not more, than the big stuff.”

According to the poll, 'Doing a chore you have been putting off forever' deserved to be made into a bigger deal (58 per cent), as did 'Arriving five minutes early to an event' (17 per cent) and 'Remembering to water the plants' (14 per cent).

“It is these little wins that actually have the ability to transform your whole day, so let's embrace them for the big deals they really are.”
