From pizza delivery drivers to multiple store owners
When Tommy Foster started working as a delivery driver, he had no idea it was a job with the lot – now he and his wife are their own bosses with the couple now owning two stores in Sydney.
From pizza delivery drivers to successful business owners – for Tommy and Stef Foster it has been a remarkable success story, which they believe is achievable for others surrounded by the right people.
Tommy started as a Domino’s delivery driver and soon after Stef joined him after hearing how much he loved it. They then went on to become store and regional managers. Tommy then used his knowledge to coach franchisees on how to run a successful store.
Stef said it was the next logical step when they decided to purchase their first store in September, in Caringbah in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.
Less than four months later, the couple now own their second store, in nearby Cronulla, and the pair are hungry for more success.
It’s tough work Tommy said, but it’s rewarding.
“We’re lucky enough to work in our own business, in a company we have always loved – it’s hard work every day but it’s always fun.”
Stef said the couple were fortunate to get their start in Domino’s, which actively encourages employees to think about the potential of opening their own store.
“At Domino’s there is a clear pathway for people to start as a driver, or a pizza maker, and to realistically consider becoming a business owner and entrepreneur – I just don’t know of another business that offers that,” Stef said.
“But it’s not just about owning your own business – we have a team of great young people working for us; some are looking for a part-time job at high school or university, and for some this is the start of a pizza career.
“Domino’s pays some of the highest wages in our industry – so if people are looking for that part-time job, or to make a go of it like we have, they’re rewarded for their effort.
“As a franchise owner, I get the added benefit of working with young people and giving them important life skills that will serve them well whichever path they choose.
“Most importantly though, it’s fun. You’re working with friends and there’s pizza, what’s better than that?”
Domino’s has recently moved to the Fast Food Industry Award (Modern Award) that provides team members wages that are among the highest in the industry, including penalty rates. The Company believes it will allow Domino’s to be an employer of choice to thousands of young Australians.
